New Media Guerrillaaaaa Takeover!

Multimedia artist Maziar Ghaderi has been leading a digital arts program with youth, exploring creative tools, techniques, and expression through digital arts. Now, they’re taking over Art Starts – Guerrilla style!

Join us on Saturday, May 31 from 6–9 PM at Art Starts (Yorkdale Mall, Lower Level) for New Media Guerrilla Takeover! A full-scale activation transforming every corner and wall of Art Starts with immersive digital art. Featuring works by Maziar, Vancouver-based multidisciplinary artist Yiya, and youth artist Myuri Srikugan, this one-night-only event invites you into a world of creative experimentation.

Want to see what’s under the hood of a projection mapping show? In the lead-up to the takeover, Maziar and Yiya will be working onsite at Art Starts on May 27 and 29 from 4:30–6:30 PM. Drop in for an open studio to meet the artists, ask questions, and get a behind-the-scenes look at their creative process.

Maziar Ghaderi
Maziar Ghaderi is a multidisciplinary media artist, educator, and creative technologist working at the intersection of immersive storytelling, cultural memory, and community engagement. He is the founder of *What We Build*, a nonprofit organization focused on media arts education, community development, and public programming that empowers emerging artists and local creatives.
Maziar’s artistic work has received national and international recognition, including a six-figure grant from the Canada Media Fund for his immersive installation *To The Stars*. His projects have been exhibited globally in cities such as Tokyo, London, and Vancouver, and he has collaborated with institutions like the MIT Media Lab and Marina Abramović Institute.
As an educator, Maziar brings over a decade of experience teaching digital media, projection mapping, and interactive design at institutions including OCAD University, Toronto Metropolitan University, NYU Abu Dhabi, the American University in Dubai, and the China Academy of Art.
Whether in the classroom or the community, Maziar’s work centers on creative experimentation, accessible technology, and bold storytelling that invites participation and reimagines what media can do.

 

Yiya Yin

Yiya Yin is a Chinese-Canadian multidisciplinary artist, art director, and trauma-informed therapist based in Vancouver. Her work bridges visual storytelling, healing practices, and community engagement, drawing from a rich cultural heritage and a lifelong commitment to creative expression.

With a background in communication design from Emily Carr University and a Master’s in Counselling, Yiya has over 15 years of experience leading projects that span painting, installation, music, and mental health. Her work has been featured in murals, multimedia exhibitions, and therapeutic art programs across North America and Asia.

As both a practicing artist and licensed therapist, Yiya supports emerging creators with a unique blend of emotional insight and artistic direction—helping them craft powerful, multisensory works rooted in personal and collective transformation.
