"I’ve seen how community arts shine a positive light on communities that don’t get much positive attention. I’ve seen how the arts have empowered individuals and whole communities to tell their stories."

Artist Ekow Nimako is known as the artist who built his career out of Lego. He was an integral guide in helping Villaways community members process the area’s revitalization.

During our Up & Rooted program in 2018, participants constructed an innovative and futuristic Villaways Community solely out of Lego pieces. It was a way to inspire hope and for them to dream about what the future could look like.

Ekow’s career has taken off and we are so honoured to have worked with him on such a transformational project.

Ashley T_Artist Headshot

Ashley is a multidisciplinary artist who works with different materials to create art in the categories of abstract, literary, and performance art. She has been a big part of Art Starts in the last couple years, instructing art programs and lending a hand at events.

Ashley submitted a stunning and intricate illustration which our graphic designer, Dameon Neath, turned into a graphic. The final design is our way of ringing in our 30th year and paying tribute to all the incredible artists who engage with Art Starts and make us who we are.

Thank you to all the incredible artists that participated.
