WHO WE ARE

Art Starts is an award-winning, charitable organization that uses the arts as a vehicle for social change. We create community-based arts programming that fosters self-expression, collaboration, and creativity in Toronto’s most underserved neighbourhoods. Since 1992, we’ve been pioneering community-engaged arts practices, collaborating with residents of all ages, and producing large-scale, community-centered art.

Our mission is to create long-term social change through community-building arts initiatives. By breaking down barriers, nurturing talent, and supporting marginalized communities, we use art to build stronger, healthier, and more vibrant neighbourhoods.

Our Guiding Principles

At Art Starts, our work is driven by our core principles:

 

Art as a Catalyst for Change: We believe in the transformative power of art to address social issues and inspire personal and collective growth.

 

Diversity and Inclusion: We champion the lived experiences of marginalized communities, including Black, Indigenous, People of Color, newcomers, 2SLGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities.

 

Equity in the Arts: We foster opportunities for artists from equity-seeking groups, breaking down barriers to artistic careers.

 

Accessibility: We ensure that all of our programming is free, with transportation and food provided, making participation accessible to all.

 

Community-Centered: We engage communities in the design and implementation of every project, ensuring that our work reflects their needs and aspirations.

Our Impact

Each year, with support from funders and donors, Art Starts enriches the lives of over 1,000 people in marginalized Toronto neighbourhoods. We create safe, inclusive spaces for self-expression and creative collaboration. Our programs offer unique opportunities for local children and youth to work with professional artists, contribute to their community, and showcase their talents. We nurture local talent, mentor emerging artists, beautify public spaces, support portfolio development, and offer training and employment opportunities.
